First, what is carbon offsetting? It’s a way to compensate for greenhouse gas emissions, often referred to as carbon footprints, by funding environmental projects. Since manufacturing and transportation are important sources of emissions, we sometimes need to remind ourselves that something that’s become as routine as an online order has an environmental cost.
Although we believe that our focus as a company should remain on reducing emissions, we also value any and all initiatives that can mitigate our current impact on the atmosphere! With their many recognized certifications, remarkable sustainable development projects, and effortless way to contribute to them, EcoCart was instantly appealing to us.
How does it work?
EcoCart allows you, as a customer, to “neutralize” the impact of an online order by adding $0.75 to your total – we opted for a fixed rate that would cover the emissions of an average order. In turn, this enables EcoCart to donate the amount required to reduce those emissions to a project chosen by us! The project we’ve decided to fund is the Sidrap Wind Farm in Indonesia. Located on the island of Sulawesi, the farm’s 30 wind turbines generate renewable energy that powers thousands of local homes.
All you need to do is select “Make my order carbon neutral” at checkout!
What we’ve been up to
Behind the scenes, we are developing an action plan (to be unveiled this summer!) to implement additional eco-conscious practices so that our products, services, and activities might become more and more environmentally responsible.
In the meantime, here are a few examples of the steps we’ve taken so far:
- For all of our commercial deliveries in the Greater Montreal area, we rely on Courant Plus, a carbon-free logistics company with a fleet entirely made up of electric vehicles.
- 100% of our damaged frames are sent to a TerraCycle recycling facility, which specializes in recycling hard-to-recycle materials.
- We are currently reusing over 50% of the packaging we receive from our various suppliers.
- Last but not least, we are working on a new initiative that will allow us to recover and reuse undamaged parts from damaged frames for repairs.
Together, let’s make a difference!
